In what could accelerate the adoption of Blu-ray high-definition technology, Amazon.com on Thursday began offering a Sylvania Blu-ray disc player for $59.99, the lowest price ever asked for a Blu-ray player. The player lacks many of the new bells and whistles of other Blu-ray players, including the ability to purchase streaming videos, or, for that matter, access the Internet at all. However, one reviewer commented on Amazon’s website, “This player does all the important stuff very well.”

UPDATE: Amazon has apparently removed the player from its listings.
