NCR TO OFFER MOVIES ON MEMORY CHIPS AT AIRPORTS

Travelers will soon be able to rent movies from NCR-manufactured kiosks in 35 major U.S. airports. Only they won’t be on DVD. Instead the kiosks will use Secure Digital (SD) memory cards and USB memory chips playable on Windows-based laptops or Apple’s iPad. NCR said on Tuesday that other devices — presumably devices like Apple’s iPhone and iPod Touch and Sony’s PlayStation Portable — will also eventually be able use the chips. The kiosks will compete against in-flight Internet services that allow passengers to stream movies directly to their laptops. However, in a statement, Alex Camara, head of NCR Entertainment, said, “Streaming content often cannot be accessed in air and never without expensive fees. … We are bringing faster and easier entertainment choices to consumers while they are on the go.”
