Avatar continues to mow down records — this time in the home-video market. According to industry researcher Screen Digest, the James Cameron blockbuster has surpassed The Dark Knight as the top Blu-ray seller and appears likely to break the 13-week record for total home-video sales. According to Screen Digest it took Avatar just two weeks to sail past the Blu-ray record of 2.40 million sales set by The Dark Knight after 73 weeks in the stores. Screen Digest projects that by the 13-week mark, the movie will have sold 14 million copies vs. Dark Knight‘s 13-week total of 13.4 million. The numbers are particularly impressive, Screen Digest President Tom Adams said, given the fact that a special edition (with “extras”) of Avatar is due to be released late this year and a 3-D version next year. “Apparently [Blu-ray Disc]-enabled households didn’t get the memo, or more likely simply couldn’t wait to see a high-definition version of the biggest box-office performer of all time on their widescreen home theaters,” Adams told Home Media magazine.
