SEN. KOHL PUTS CONDITIONS ON COMCAST TAKEOVER OF NBC

If Comcast takes over control of NBC Universal, it should divest NBC’s interest in Hulu, the second largest video website behind YouTube that the network owns with the Walt Disney Co. and News Corp, Wisconsin Sen. Herb Kohl said Wednesday. Kohl, who chairs the Senate antitrust, competition policy, and consumer rights subcommittee, which is considering the proposed merger, indicated that he is concerned about Comcast’s advocacy of “TV Everywhere,” which would allow viewers to watch a favorite program on their TV sets, mobile devices, and computers for free — provided that they subscribe to a cable-TV tier that offers the program. Currently, Hulu users can watch programs free but cannot skip commercials embedded in them. Kohl also wants Comcast to agree not to move any shows from NBC to a cable network in which Comcast owns a stake.
