“TOY STORY 3” BURNS UP THE BOX OFFICE

Virtually all of the top films beat Sunday’s estimates, final box-office results indicated on Monday. Toy Story 3 wound up with $110.31 million. The Karate Kid dropped just 46 percent to $29.88 million and crossed the $100 million mark after just ten days. Its gross now stands at $107.13 million. Fox’s The A-Team slid 44 percent to $14.41 million to place third. Even Jonah Hex exceeded its estimates, earning $5.39 million to place seventh (instead of eighth, where Sunday’s estimates had placed it). Although Toy Story 3 opened on the largest number of 3D screens ever, its revenue from those screens was actually 1 percent lower that it was for Shrek Forever After, Home Media magazine reported Monday, citing a study by BTIG analyst Richard Greenfield. That result, Greenfield concluded, indicates that the 3D novelty is wearing off and that moviegoers are beginning to weigh the value of premium priced 3D tickets against lower-priced 2D tickets, particularly for family films. “We fear 3D fatigue,” Greenfield wrote. “We believe movie exhibitors could generate higher box office results, especially on family films, by lowering the 3D ticket surcharges (both IMAX 3D and non-IMAX 3D).”
