One year ago, Paramount’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra opened with $54.7 million dollars to give the box office its first “up” weekend in a month. By contrast, Will Ferrell’s The Other Guys opened this past weekend with $35.5 million as the box office turned in its first “down” weekend in a month. Overall, the box office was down 7.2 percent. Nevertheless, for the year it’s up 4.6 percent and is poised to cross the $7 billion mark by next weekend. Virtually all that increase, however, can be attributed to surcharges on 3D movies. Attendance is virtually flat — up just 1 percent.
