After failing to halt an unrelenting exodus of viewers and taking a pummeling from cable news rivals, CNN U.S. President Jon Klein was fired today (Friday). The news was first reported by the TV news website, which published a memo to staff from Jim Walton, president of CNN Worldwide, in which Klein’s departure was not mentioned until the next-to-the-last paragraph. Klein sent out a lengthy memo afterwards listing his accomplishments at the cable news network but failing to reveal his future plans. Walton’s memo, which did not indicate why Klein was being replaced, noted that CNN will now be led by Ken Jautz, who will move from HLN (formerly CNN Headline News). Klein’s dismissal comes within weeks after his decision to replace a primetime newscast with a talk show featuring former New York Gov. Elliot Spitzer and conservative commentator Kathleen Parker and to bring in Piers Morgan to take over Larry King’s slot in December.
