After the back-to-school lull that usually occurs during the first two weeks of September, activity is expected to begin picking up at the box office this weekend with the opening of four films in wide release, each taking aim at specific demographic niches. But while overall ticket sales will likely rise over last weekend, the slowest in four years, none of the newcomers is expected to earn more than $20 million. Two of them, the Warner Bros. actioner The Town, starring Ben Affleck, and the Sony/Screen Gems teen comedy Easy A, starring Emma Stone, are expected to wind up in a tight race for first place. Universal’s PG horror film Devil (not screened in advance for critics) and the 3D animated title Alpha and Omega are expected to land in the third and fourth spot respectively.
