The website TVbytheNumbers, which analyzes broadcast and cable ratings, has been reporting in recent weeks that Jay Leno’s ratings among adults 18-49 have consistently been trailing those racked up last year by Conan O’Brien. It noted, however, that last week was an exception when Leno’s Tonight show topped O’Brien’s Tonight show when comparing the same calendar weeks. However, it noted, on Thursday night, both this year and last year, Tonight followed blow-out ratings for the kick-off of the NFL football season. But while O’Brien’s show was not included in the numbers last year, Leno’s were this year. If Thursday night had been eliminated from the ratings tally for both talk-show hosts, O’Brien would have come out ahead with an average 1.2 rating among adults 18-49, while Leno would have wound up with a 1.0. David Letterman’s rating in the demo for both years was a 0.7.
