MTV VIDEO AWARDS GO GAGA OVER GAGA

Bearing out the fact that pop music is no longer just about the sound, Lady Gaga, dressed in an outfit that looked as if it were made from slabs of raw meat, accepted a record-tying eight awards at Sunday night’s MTV Video Music Awards, seven of them, including video of the year, for her “Bad Romance” video. (“Telephone,” which she recorded with Beyonce, won for best collaboration.) E! Entertainment Channel talk-show host Chelsea Handler received mixed reviews for her emcee efforts. The Los Angeles Times said that she “had plenty of verve and vinegar. She is known for ribald audacity and an unflinching candor about her own escapades. Handler was a game presence all night.” But Chad Batka said in the New York Times that Handler “was among the worst [hosts] in the show’s history — purposefully out-of-touch, with brief, alarming flashes of off-color racial humor.” And Associated Press music writer Nekesa Mumbi Moody commented: “Host Chelsea Handler gave the show its traditional bawdiness, though her jokes often fell flat. She did have a few zingers, most of them vulgar.”
