Paranormal Activity 2 did not suffer the sequel blues of most horror flicks. In fact it became the biggest horror-flick earner ever over the weekend, raking in $40,678,424, and taking the record set by last year’s Friday the 13th redo. Surprisingly what might have pushed the film over the top was its appearance on IMAX screens. Box-office analyst Paul Dergarabedian noted on Monday that the intentially low-tech-looking movie garnered $2.5 million in IMAX theaters.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo:
1. Paranormal Activity 2, Paramount, $40,678,424, (New); 2. Jackass 3-D, Paramount, $21,313,815, 2 Wks. ($86,861,041); 3. RED, Summit, $15,034,916, 2 Wks. ($43,518,185); 4.
