The rescue of the Chilean mine workers is no doubt being cheered as loudly by CNN executives and staff as by those at the scene. CNN’s coverage on Tuesday night preempted its regular programming, which on Monday collected the worst ratings that the cable news network has recorded in more than ten years. The second week of Parker Spitzer started off with just 311,000 viewers. That, in turn, pushed down the numbers for Larry King Live, whose interview with Afghan president Hamid Karzai drew only 196,000 viewers. King has already announced that he’s stepping down in December. As for Parker Spitzer, the Baltimore Sun’s TV critic David Zurawik commented today (Wednesday): “Forget about Parker Spitzer. It’s dead, and the only question left is when the guys with the body bags come and take [it] away.”
