Football has always been popular on television, but never in the history of the medium has it been as popular as it has become this season. According to a Nielsen study, NFL games on broadcast and cable outlets have averaged 18.3 million viewers since September. That compares with 8.6 million viewers for the average network TV show this season. Thus far this season more than 175 million viewers have watched at least part of an NFL game, up from 170 million during the comparable period a year ago. The 11 most-watched TV shows this season have all been NFL games, topped by the Packers-Eagles game on Fox on September 12, which drew 28 million viewers, and last Sunday’s Colts-Eagles game on CBS, which drew 27.8 million.
