Buy a DVD or Blu-ray disc from Amazon, and you’ll be able to watch it on a PC or on an Internet-connected TV set at once. The online retailer said Tuesday that it is including a free digital copy with any of more than 10,000 new and catalog releases in its library. Customers don’t need to request the copy — which can only be streamed online; it is automatically added to their Amazon Video on Demand personal library. “Customers love instant gratification,” Amazon’s Steve Oliver said in a statement, “and this program allows customers to watch … without having to wait for their DVD or Blu-ray to arrive in the mail.” J.P. Morgan analysts were unimpressed, noting that Amazon is a relatively small player in the video-on-demand market. Moreover, they observed, “A single DVD purchase under the program costs, in most cases, more than a month-long Netflix subscription” that allows virtually an unlimited number of movies and television shows to be viewed via online streaming or disc.
