Singer Cheryl Cole has reportedly gone AWOL from the U.K. hit talent show The X Factor to go house-hunting in Los Angeles, amid rumors that she will become a judge on the American version of the show when it launches next year. The London Daily Star said today (Friday) that Cole had left in the lurch four X Factor acts that she had been mentoring, sparking “fierce criticism from” the staff of the ITV show. The Star quoted a crew member as saying, “This is a critical time for the girls and they really need their mentor around. Yes, she can be in contact via phone but it’s not the same. It is made clear to the judges that they are expected to be fully committed to the show.” A spokesman for the production company, however, dismissed the criticism, saying “Judges are always contactable wherever they are.”
