While there was considerable joy in fogville Monday night as the San Francisco Giants won their first World Series since moving from New York more than a half century ago, executives of Fox were probably feeling as disappointed as fans of the Texas Rangers. Not only did the series end after just five games, cutting off possible revenue for a game six or seven, but ratings for the final game dropped like an infield blooper. Monday’s game attracted just 11.96 million viewers, versus 17.09 million for Game 5 of last year’s contest between the New York Yankees and the Philadelphia Phillies. In fact, most viewers Monday night preferred to watch the dancing competition on ABC’s Dancing with the Stars, which easily beat out the World Series with an average 19.63 million viewers. Against such formidable competition, CBS showed surprising strength with 10.59 million viewers — and will likely reveal even more muscle when Live Plus DVR figures are released next week. (CBS’s Monday-night lineup of comedies and Hawaii Five-0 produces some of the most recorded shows of the week.)
