While it may have seemed as if there was a plethora of 3D animated features in theaters this year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has ruled only 15 were eligible for Oscar nominations — meaning that there will only be three films nominated in the animated feature category. Under Academy rules, a minimum of 16 films must qualify in order for five of them to be selected for nominations. The 15 eligible films are (in alphabetical order): Alpha and Omega, Cats & Dogs, The Dreams of Jinsha (Chinese), How to Train Your Dragon, Idiots and Angels, The Illusionist (French), Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga’Hoole, Megamind, My Dog Tulip (British), Shrek Forever After, Summer Wars (Japan), Tangled, Tinker Bell and the Great Fairy Rescue, and Toy Story 3.
