TV SHOWS ACCOUNT FOR HALF NETFLIX’S STREAMS

Ted Sarandos, the chief content officer for online video renter Netflix, says half of its subscribers who rent from its Internet streaming library select television shows to watch versus just 20 percent who rent TV shows by mail. During an interview with Andrew Wallenstein of paidContent.com at an industry conference, Sarandos said that most of those who use Netflix’s streaming video feature to view TV shows are trying to catch up on episodes they missed and often view them in marathon sessions. He said that when the company first started streaming content four years ago, “We did the deals we could get” with movie studios. “In other words, we got junk … but that eventually led us away from movies and towards TV content.”
