Taylor Hackford, the president of the Directors Guild of America, has called Google an enabler of video piracy that allows users to discover in an instant where they can download copyrighted movies illegally. “Google is making money through (its) search engine with these sites,” he told the Entertainment Content Protection Summit, according to Daily Variety. “We’ve got to be able to say [to Google], ‘You are facilitating illegal activity.'” Hackford said that online piracy represents “the most threatening issue that has hit our indutry in its entire history” and claimed that it costs the U.S. $25 billion annually. To those who maintain that the motion picture business must overhaul its business model, Hackford replied, “No business model we create can compete with free.”
