(Updated) Studios and theater owners were no doubt in full agreement with Ebenezer Scrooge’s assessment of the Christmas holiday this weekend as total ticket receipts plunged 49 percent below last year’s. The ghost of Christmas past surely haunted Universal’s Little Fockers, which, although coming in first, earned just $34 million over the weekend and $48.3 million since Wednesday, according to studio estimates.. Six years ago the first sequel, Meet the Fockers, took in $46 million during its opening weekend and $70.5 million over the five-day holiday, when Christmas Day also fell on a Saturday. Jeff Bridges had little to grumble about, however, He starred in both the No. 2 and No. 3 films at the box office. And indeed, True Grit, directed by the Coen Brothers, came in well above industry estimates, earning $25.6 million for the weekend and $36.8 million for the five-day holiday, largely as a result of terrific reviews for Bridges’s performance and enthusiastic word-of-mouth. It was the best opening for a Coen Brothers movie ever. Last weekend’s No. 1 film, Tron: Legacy, which also stars Bridges, dropped to No. 3 with $20.1 million/$31.8 million, bringing its 10-day total to $88.3 million. The Jack Black starrer Gulliver’s Travels, which did not open until Saturday in the hope of avoiding the holiday theater rush — which never materialized — landed with a thud with just $7.2 million for Saturday and Sunday.
