Several TV syndicators have had meetings with Katie Couric to pitch her on hosting a daytime talk show if CBS does not renew her $15-million-a-year contract next year to anchor the CBS Evening News, Broadcasting & Cable reported today (Thursday), citing several unnamed sources. “She could get in there and command a lot of money,” one syndication executive told the trade publication. While it is likely that a large number of stations could be cleared for a Couric-hosted talk show, success rates for such shows are notoriously low. For example, even with impressive clearances in 2004, a daytime talk show featuring Jane Pauley — like Couric, another former Today show cohost — lasted only a single season, and Pauley virtually disappeared from television after it collapsed.
