A half century after the civil rights movement began, Tom Brokaw is fronting a documentary about discrimination, Bridging the Divide, which is due to air on the USA Network on Dec. 10. In an interview with the Associated Press to promote the telecast, Brokaw complained that “too much of the media dialogue” these days promotes the kind of divisions that are reminiscent of the hatreds that roiled society during the clashes over race 50 years ago. The difference, he suggested, is that cable TV and the Internet, which did not exist then, now impact society. Brokaw told the A.P.: “The trend is steadily in the direction of being as divisive as possible, to belittle your opponents, and this is across the political spectrum. That kind of thing we need to get beyond.”
