U.K. MOVIE TO DEBUT IN THEATERS AND ON VOD SAME DAY

For the first time in the U.K., a movie will be debuting in theaters and via video-on-demand (VOD) simultaneously. The Iraq war-themed In Our Name, which was backed by the BBC, is due to open Friday in the arthouse chain Curzon Theaters and can be viewed the same day via Curzon on Demand on television sets or personal computers. Ticket prices at the theaters will be about $20; prices for online viewing will be about $12. In an interview with Britain’s Guardian newspaper, Curzon CEO Philip Knatchbull said he did not expect the online availability will cannibalize sales at theaters. “If people are going out to the cinema they expect a big screen, comfy seats and great sound,” Knatchbull said, “But there is a constituency of people that are never going to the cinema because they don’t want to, and the technology has arrived where we can deliver a film in high definition which they can watch on their own platform.”
