THE CAPE FAR FROM SUPER ON MONDAY NIGHT; BCS ALMIGHTY

On the surface, NBC’s hopes of being saved on Monday night by its superhero series, The Cape, would appear to have been dashed when the series made a last-place debut in its regular time period following its preview debut on Sunday. But, facing opposition from a championship BCS game on ESPN, the network decided merely to repeat the episode it had aired the night before. The result was predictable. The show attracted just 3.5 million viewers. Meanwhile, ABC’s The Bachelor returned to its winning ways at 8:00 p.m. with 8.42 million viewers, while CBS’s Two and a Half Men once again was the top-rated broadcast show of the night at 9:00 p.m. with 10.18 million viewers. That figure, however, looked puny compared with the 27.3 million recorded for ESPN’s telecast of the Tostitos BCS National Championship between Auburn and Oregon — the highest rating in the history of cable television, according to Nielsen.
