FILM TO DEBUT IN THEATERS AND VOD ON SAME DAY

Satellite service DISH Network said Tuesday that it will make The Resident, starring Hillary Swank, available on so-called premium video-on-demand on Friday, the same day that it debuts in movie theaters. Although some studios have discussed the possibility of releasing films on VOD while they are still in theaters, none has suggested a willingness to do so on the same day that they are released theatrically. Moreover, the premium VOD price they are discussing is in the neighborhood of $20-30. The Resident, which is being released by independent distributor Image Entertainment, will go for $5.99 for high definition and $4.99 for standard definition. In a statement, DISH programming chief Dave Shull boasted, “Not only do we offer movies simultaneously with the theatrical release, but also we give our customers access to a huge library of movies available 28 days before Netflix and Redbox, as well as on the same day or prior to DVD release.”
