Cable could pave the way for 3D DVDs. Currently most home video distributors have shied away from producing 3D Blu-ray discs given the small base of 3D television sets in homes today. For months last year it had been rumored that James Cameron’s Avatar would be released on 3D Blu-ray in time for the holidays in December. But the only version that became available required the purchase of a Panasonic Viera 3D Plasma set. (The 3D Avatar Blu-ray disc is being sold on several websites for about $200.) But on Monday, Home Media magazine indicated that 3D versions of movies could come to home theaters via cable’s video on demand. It noted that Time Warner has begun offering DreamWorks Animation’s Megamind via VOD to its subscribers during the same week that it debuted on DVD and Blu-ray.
