DISNEY TO LAUNCH KIDS MAGAZINES

March 21, 2011 by · 1 Comment

Hoping to replicate the success of the children’s subscription magazine business in Europe, Disney Publishing plans to introduce several new kids-oriented magazines on Tuesday, the New York Times reported today (Monday). The newspaper quoted Aparna Pande, Disney’s general manager for American magazines, as saying, “Kids want them, and moms will pay for them.” The newspaper pointed out, however, that Nickelodeon did not encounter a receptive market two years ago, when it wound up shutting down its namesake magazine. Disney’s entry into the market will be a 52-page glossy — not a traditional comic book — featuring the Disney channel characters Phineas and Ferb, according to the Times. A single issue will cost $4.99 and an annual subscription $23.95. The newspaper did not indicate whether the magazines will contain advertising.
