There’s a new player in the kiosk video rental business. Home Media magazine reports that Beverly Hills-based Public Media Works has installed its first 25 “Spot. The Difference” kiosks in Riverside County, CA to test the public’s reaction to its service, which offers Blu-ray Disc movies for 89 cents — substantially below the $1.50 charged by rivals Redbox and Blockbuster Express. The kiosks also hold 1,400 discs, sport a 32-inch HD monitor, and two slots for returning discs. Home Media quoted Public Media Works President Greg Waring as saying, “By listening to consumers we’ve addressed several pitfalls inherent in current kiosk offerings, including low capacity, slow service times and the perception of price gouging for Blu-ray.”
