Meredith Vieira is planning to leave her two jobs as co-host of NBC’s Today and host of the syndicated Who Wants to Be a Millionaire when her contracts for those shows expire late this year, published reports citing unnamed sources said on Tuesday. Vieira has reportedly told producers of those programs that she wishes to have more time to spend with her husband, Richard Cohen, who suffers from multiple sclerosis. Vieira’s contract expires at about the same time as Katie Couric’s at CBS — not coincidentally, inasmuch as Vieira was brought in to replace Couric when Couric left the Today show to anchor the CBS Evening News. Today’s (Wednesday) New York Post quoted a high-placed source as saying, “I would guess with all the stress she’s under, in all likelihood, she’s not going to continue. … It really has worn on her. It’s emotionally draining.” The Hollywood Reporter, which, with TVGuideOnline, first reported Vieira’s plans to leave, quoted another source as saying that she is still making her decision but that re-upping looks unlikely.

UPDATE: Entertainment Tonight reported on its website late today that Matt Lauer will also leave Today when his contract expires at the end of next year, according to unnamed sources. The news immediately prompted speculation that Lauer may join his old teammates Katie Couric and Jeff Zucker in a new syndicated daytime talk show.
