Gordon Brown

Gordon Brown, the former British prime minister, had wanted to conduct a judicial inquiry into allegations of phone hacking by News of the World but was dissuaded from doing so by Gus O’Donnell, the cabinet secretary who warned that such an investigation would be politically too sensitive at the time of last year’s election, Britain’s Guardian newspaper reported today (Monday), citing no sources. The newspaper also revealed that Brown had warned Peter Mandelson, a member of his cabinet and a frequent target of British tabloids, that his phone had been hacked by News of the World reporters. The Guardian did not disclose how Brown had learned of the hacking.
