All major networks except struggling NBC had something to boast about as the May sweeps period came to an end. CBS once again attracted more viewers overall than any other network. But Fox finished No. 1 among adults 18-49, increasing its lead this year thanks to a huge surge of viewers for American Idol. (Final ratings for its season finale on Wednesday put the total average audience for the two hours at 29.29 million, with 38.6 million tuned in to see the announcement of the winner.) And ABC, with big audience gains for Dancing with the Stars, climbed to second place among adults 18-49, moving ahead of CBS in that demo as it usually does in May. Only NBC had little to boast about. At the beginning of the month its new talent show The Voice drew solid numbers, but they weakened in succeeding weeks.
