AN FCC COMMISSIONER HEADS TO COMCAST

Barely four months after voting to approve Comcast’s takeover of NBC Universal, FCC Commissioner Meredith Attwell is stepping down from the broadcasting regulator to become a lobbyist for Comcast. The broadcast/cable giant maintained, however, that it did not begin discussions with Attwell about taking the job until after the FCC had approved the deal. Official restrictions are on the books on the amount of lobbying she can do for Comcast — especially during the next two years. But Craig Aaron, head of the consumer group Free Press, indicated that he believes those restrictions are window dressing. “This is just the latest — though perhaps most blatant — example of a so-called public servant cashing in at a company she is supposed to be regulating,” he said in a statement. “No wonder the public is so nauseated by business as usual in Washington, where the complete capture of government by industry barely raises any eyebrows.”
