NBC, which leads in news programming while nearly all of its entertainment shows continue to languish, is planning to launch a new primetime magazine program hosted by NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, the Wall Street Journal reported today (Friday), citing two people familiar with the matter. NBC’s Dateline series has managed to produce solid ratings on Friday nights and adequate ratings on Sunday (although ratings for both nights have declined from a year ago); in recent years it has tended to focus on crime stories. During the summer, when Dateline can sometimes account for more than a quarter of all NBC programming, it often grabs ratings that are higher than the regular-season shows it replaced. The new program — apparently untitled so far — is expected to focus on longer segments than those of most magazine programs and act as a “showcase of NBC News,” according to the Journal.
