CABLE NEWS CHANNELS MORE POPULAR ONLINE THAN NEWSPAPERS
The websites of each of the major cable news channels draw more traffic than those of any newspaper — with CNN topping the field, National Public Radio (NPR) media correspondent David Folkenflik observed on Tuesday. CNN.com averages 8.5 million unique U.S. visitors each day, Folkenflik noted, citing figures from audience measurement company ComScore. MSNBC.com was No 2 with 7.4 million. By contrast, the most visited newspaper site is NYTimes.com, which draws 5.5 million. Rick Edmonds, media business analyst for The Poynter Institute, the St. Petersburg, FL journalism school, told Folkenflik that the online dominance of the cable news networks can be explained by the fact that most people associate cable with breaking news but newspapers are believed to be late arrivals, since they only publish once a day — and early in the morning at that.
