Dick Ebersol

Dick Ebersol has resigned as head of NBC Sports and Olympics, raising speculation that the network will not be so aggressive as it has been in the past at landing NFL telecasts and bidding on rights to future Olympic Games coverage. The New York Times reported on its website that while it appeared that Ebersol had lost a long-rumored battle with Comcast over expensive sports coverage, Ebersol himself maintained that he was leaving simply because he was unable to reach an agreement with Comcast over terms of a new contract. For many years, NFL and Olympics telecasts have served as a loss leader for NBC intended to give the network a powerful platform to promote its entertainment programming. But the sports telecasts, which reportedly lose hundreds of millions each year, have been unable to lift the number of viewers for NBC’s regular schedule, which ranks a distant fourth among the major networks.
