Merger committees of the two principal actors unions, the Screen Actors Guild, and the American Federation of Television and Radio Artists, plan to meet together for the first time in Washington over the weekend of June 17-19, according to trade reports on Thursday. SAG and AFTRA later confirmed that the meeting is scheduled to take place at the National Labor College — an actual college, which calls itself “the nation’s only accredited higher education institution devoted exclusively to educating union members, leaders and staff.” The college, which receives funding from the AFL-CIO, boasts the impressive Kirkland Conference Center, named after former AFL-CIO President Lane Kirkland. Presumably merger negotiators will be able to tap the academic resources of the college as they tackle the complex issues that have scuttled previous merger efforts.
