The Foreign Press Association, a group representing the news media in Israel, has condemned the Israeli government’s warning that it will punish journalists covering a 10-ship flotilla that is planning an attempt to defy the Israeli blockade of Gaza later this month. The flotilla is expected to carry up to 500 passengers, who include The Color Purpleauthor Alice Walker and Hedy Epstein, an 87-year-old survivor of the Holocaust. On Sunday, Israel warned journalists that if they plan to be aboard the flotilla, they face deportation, will be banned from Israel for 10 years and will have their equipment confiscated. In its statement today (Monday), the FPA said, “Journalists covering a legitimate news event should be allowed to do their jobs without threats and intimidation. We urge the government to reverse its decision immediately.”
