Peter Falk, best known for his portrayal of the crumpled-trenchcoat-wearing private detective Columbo, has died in Beverly Hills at the age of 83. He had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2007. Falk also had an illustrious career in films and the stage, winning a Tony award for his performance in Neil Simon’s The Prisoner of Second Avenue (1975) and two Oscar nominations. He also received five Emmys, four of them for his work on Columbo. In 2008, his daughter, telling a Los Angeles court that her father needed full-time custodial care, said that “he forgets events that have occurred and remembers events that did not occur.” She said he had no memory at all of Columbo.
