Of all regularly televised sports, hockey remains the lowest-rated. Even the championship Stanley Cup Finals generally fails to draw a sizable audience. That was not the case, however, with Game 7 of this year’s Finals which, NBC said on Thursday, produced the biggest audience for an NHL game in 38 years and the most for a Stanley Cup seventh game in 40 years. According to Nielsen figures cited in the NBC press release, the game, which saw the Boston Bruins defeat the Vancouver Canucks, 4-0 (the Bruins’ first championship since 1972) drew 8.54 million viewers. In Boston, the game posted a whopping 43.4 rating and a 64 share, the highest rating ever for a hockey game in that city and the best rating in Boston for any sport since the 2008 Super Bowl which drew a 55.6 rating for the Patriots-Giants contest.
