It may be a black-and-white film that already has long rested on the shelves of most video collectors — hardly, it would seem, something that would be greatly enhanced on a Blu-ray disc. But Warner Bros. is reportedly engaging in an expensive restoration Orson Welles’s classic Citizen Kane for release on Blu-ray on September 13th, the 70th anniversary of the film’s premiere. According to reports, each of the 171,000 frames of the film is being cleaned up for the new “Ultimate Collector’s Edition.” The three-disc set also includes more than three hours of “bonus” videos, including the 1999 HBO drama RKO 281, starring Lieve Schreiber as Welles and the documentary The Battle Over Citizen Kane. In addition the set includes a 48-page photo book, a 20-page reproduction of the original 1941 souvenir program, lobby cards, and reproductions of rare correspondence. Also included: a DVD of Welles’s The Magnificent Ambersons.
