WEINER CAPTURES 33 PERCENT OF CABLE NEWS’S TIME

June 15, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Cable news networks devoted 33 percent of their time last week to the sexting scandal involving Congressman Anthony Weiner. According to the Project for Excellence in Journalism, the broadcast network television newscasts devoted 14 percent of their time to the scandal, slightly above online news websites, which nevertheless amounted to 14 percent of their news articles. By contrast, newspapers devoted just 7 percent of their space to the scandal. During the week, Wiener got three times more coverage than President Obama. “There was a prurient paparazzi component to last week’s coverage as well,” the PEJ observed. “News outlets apparently could not resist relying on double entendres to describe the episode and some of the coverage had an inevitably giggling quality to it.”
