The box office is expected to cool off considerably this weekend. Only one new film is opening wide, 20th Century Fox’s X-Men: First Class. Box-office forecasters predict that it will sell about $55-60 million worth of tickets — about half what X-Men: The Last Stand took in ($105.8 million) when it opened in 2006, and even well below the $85.1 million that X-Men Origins Wolverine earned during its opening in 2009. Forecasters are also predicting a big drop for The Hangover Part II, even though ticket sales for the second week of the original dropped only 27 percent in its second weekend. And DreamWorks Animation is hoping that word-of-mouth will prevent a big slide in ticket sales for Kung Fu Panda 2. Moviegoers who were polled by CinemaScore following last week’s opening gave it an A rating.
