Who wudda smurfed it? The Smurfs was the top movie at the box office on Friday, smurfing in an estimated $13.3 million and smurfing out Cowboys and Aliens, which had been favored to win but ended up in second place with around $12.99 million. Captain America, which many predicted would wind up in second place, saw a whopping 70-percent plunge from last Friday as it earned about $8 million. Box-office forecasters still expect Cowboys to come out on top by the end of the weekend with around $40-45 million, but they’re hedging their bets. Daily Variety noted on its website that “tracking for family films is notoriously unpredictable.” The trade publication, which initially had predicted that The Smurfs would wind up with around $18-22 million for the weekend, now says it is likely to earn “something closer to $30 million.”
