MEDIA EXEC: PIRATES SPEND MORE ON MOVIES THAN OTHERS

The former chief information officer of Google, who went on to become COO of New Music for EMI, has disclosed that research he conducted concerning users of the now-shuttered LimeWire peer-to-peer service indicated that those who pirated copyrighted content online were also some of the biggest spenders on such content. As reported by ComputerWorld (via TorrentFreak.com) Douglas C. Merrill told a conference in Sydney, Australia on Tuesday that the tactic of suing persons who download music and movies from pirate sites “is like trying to sell soap by throwing dirt on your customers.” Last week, TorrentFreak reported on another study that also concluded that users of pirate sites “buy more DVDs, visit the cinema more often and on average spend more at the box office than their honest counterparts.”
