The mother of an eight-year-old girl who was murdered in 2000 has been informed that Scotland Yard has found evidence that her voicemail was hacked by a private detective working for
News of the World. Published reports in the U.K. noted that even while the newspaper was campaigning for a law targeting child molesters following the murder of Sarah Payne, it was hacking her mother’s phone. Unaware that the hacking had occurred, the mother, Sara Payne, wrote a letter for the final edition of
News of the World referring to the staff as “my good and trusted friends.”
