It’s clear that no major studio was going to take on the latest Transformers movie on its second weekend by putting up any costly production against it. (That will come next weekend with the opening the finale of the Harry Potter movies.) But two low-budget comedies being released this weekend are expected to do OK. Both are receiving mostly dreadful reviews — but so did Transformers: Dark of the Moon, which is expected to earn $40-45 million this weekend. The two newcomers, Horrible Bosses and Zookeeper are each expected to come in with about half that amount. Horrible Bosses is aimed at adults; Zookeeper, at kids. And while the latter film stars Kevin James, who proved to be successful at attracting younger viewers with his first starring movie, Paul Bart: Mall Cop and at attracting family viewers with his long-running TV series, The King of Queens, he also is facing competition from a slew of other hold-over family films, including Cars 2, Mr. Popper’s Penguins, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides.
