FOREIGN BOX OFFICE BELONGS TO SMURFS

Overseas, Sony’s The Smurfs held on to first place for the third consecutive week with $25.5 million, down just 28 percent from the previous week, to bring its foreign total to $256 million. Also holding strong was 20th Century Fox’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes, which collected $22.1 million to lift its overseas tally to $158.5 million. Warner Bros./New Line’s Final Destination 5 opened in 20 countries to finish in third place with $21 million, $7.9 million of that figure coming from Russia.
