The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has demanded that Israel clarify why it is holding Samer Allawi, al-Jazeera’s bureau chief in Kabul, Afghanistan. The CPJ said on Monday that Allawi was arrested at a border crossing while returning from a vacation in the West Bank city of Nablus. Mohamed Abdel Dayem, the CPJ coordinator for the Middle East and North Africa, said, “Our concern for Allawi’s well-being and his legal rights is amplified with every passing day that he is held without due process.” Israel has said only that Allawi’s arrest is “security related.” No charges have been filed against him.
