According to the conservative Parents Television Council, which frequently spearheads protests against sexual references on television, children are instinctively drawn to cartoons and, in flipping channels, often land on those that are aimed at adults. In a study released on Tuesday, the PTC particularly criticized two cable networks, Adult Swim and the Cartoon Network, for failing to warn parents of suggestive and crude language. The study, which also included the Disney Channel and Nick at Nite, found that “adult content” appears once every 2 minutes and 19 seconds. It counted 565 uses of profanity and 680 instances of sexual content over a three-week period. “Parents need to understand just how explicit these cartoons are so they can make better viewing decisions for their family,” PTC president Tim Winter said in a statement.
