That tight, five-way race at the box office that had been predicted between holdover Rise of the Planet of the Apes and four new entries failed to materialize, except — arguably — between the top two films. Apes rose to the top again with a solid $27.5 million, down about 50 percent from last week’s opening, according to studio estimates. Coming in second was DreamWorks’s The Help with $25.5 million — not exactly a photo finish, except that when one considers that the movie collected $35.4 million since opening on Wednesday and that it would easily have emerged the winner had it opened on Friday. The three other new contenders performed well below expectations. Warner Bros./New Line’s Final Destination 5 wound up with about $18.4 million; it had been expected to take in $20-25 million. Sony’s 30 Minutes or Less took in less than the $15-20 million that forecasters figured it would earn, settling for $13 million. But the biggest disappointment of all was the performance of Glee: The 3D Concert Movie, which earned just $5.7 million, despite predictions that it was a real wildcard and could surprise everyone by placing first. It also represented another gloomy portent for 3D and the technology’s attendant surcharges. Glee played only in 3D theaters.

The Change-Up, $6.2 million.
